TyreSwitch is a free calculator that tells drivers when to change to winter tyres – and back to summer tyres in spring – for their own town. We are happy to help with stories about the seasonal tyre change, including data for your city from our city pages.

Key facts

  • Free, no registration, works in the browser on phone and desktop, in English, Polish and German.
  • A date for a specific town: combines the ~10-day weather forecast with climate averages from the last 10 years.
  • Takes the driving profile into account: driving hours, experience, road type (city, rural, mountains) and how often you drive.
  • Typical-date pages for around 100 cities in Poland, Germany, Austria and Czechia, plus an overview of winter tyre laws in 17 European countries.

How we calculate the date

The basis is the widely used 7 °C rule: winter tyres make sense once the 5-day average temperature stays below 7 °C. The calculator moves the date earlier before the first frost or snow, warns about black ice (precipitation at −2 to +2 °C) and adjusts for the driver’s profile. Details: how it works.

Data sources

  • Weather forecast: MET Norway (Norwegian Meteorological Institute), CC BY 4.0.
  • Climate data: Copernicus ERA5 (Copernicus Climate Change Service), averages over the last 10 years.
  • Place search: © OpenStreetMap contributors.

City data

The typical best change window, the average first frost, frost days in November and the last 10 seasons for around 100 cities are published on the city pages – feel free to quote them with a credit.
