About TyreSwitch

TyreSwitch is a free web app that helps drivers decide when to change from summer to winter tyres in autumn and back again in spring. It combines your location, a short-range weather forecast, long-term climate averages and your own driving habits into a clear, personal recommendation. You decide; we give you the dates and the reasons behind them.

Who runs TyreSwitch

TyreSwitch is run by TyreSwitch. It started from a simple observation: most advice on tyre changes is either a fixed calendar date or a vague “when it gets cold”. Neither takes into account where you live, when you drive or what roads you use. TyreSwitch aims to fill that gap with transparent rules and open data.

Editorial principles

  • Transparency: the rules behind every recommendation are published on our how it works page. We do not hide the logic behind a score.
  • No invented numbers: we do not publish made-up statistics, test results or quotes. Where something is a rule of thumb, such as the 7 °C threshold, we say so.
  • Safety first, but your choice: when in doubt, our rules lean towards caution. The final decision is always yours.
  • Plain language: we write for drivers, not engineers.
  • Independence: TyreSwitch is funded by advertising. Advertisers have no influence on the recommendations or the content of our guides.

Winter tyre rules differ between countries and change over time. We summarise them from official government and road authority sources and other publicly available information, and we review them before each winter season and whenever we learn of a change. The legal summaries on our winter tyre laws overview are shown separately from the weather-based recommendation. They are general information, not legal advice, so please always check the current local rules.

Data we use

Weather forecasts come from MET Norway, climate averages from Copernicus ERA5 and place names from OpenStreetMap via Nominatim. Full details and licences are on our how it works page.
