When to change to winter tyres?

Your personal tyre change calculator for the 2026/2027 season.

TyreSwitch tells you when to change to winter tyres — and back to summer tyres in spring — for your exact location. It combines the 7 °C rule, frost and black-ice warnings from the weather forecast and long-term climate averages, then adjusts the dates to your experience, the roads you use and the hours you drive.

Good to know

  • The recommendation is based on the weather forecast for about the next 10 days and on climate averages beyond that, which are estimates.
  • It considers your driving profile.
  • It is guidance, not a guarantee.
  • Legal requirements are shown separately and are not legal advice.
  • The driver decides.

Rules for each change

Summer → winter

Your change now
  1. 7 °C: change when the 5-day average temperature stays below 7 °C (8 °C for novices).
  2. Frost or snow: change before the first one arrives.
  3. Black ice: rain at −2 to +2 °C is the biggest risk, so change early.
  4. Best days are the day the cold sets in and the 7 days before it. Good days are 8–21 days before.
  5. Your profile: early and night driving, mountains, rural roads and less experience move the change earlier.

Winter → summer

  1. 7 °C: change when the 5-day average temperature stays above 7 °C (8 °C for novices).
  2. Frost or snow: wait until the day after the last one.
  3. Black ice: rain at −2 to +2 °C means wait.
  4. Best days are the first 7 days after it warms up. After 21 days, winter tyres wear fast.
  5. Your profile: the same factors make you wait longer, so the change never comes too early.

How your experience changes the advice

  • Novice (under 2 years): 8 °C threshold instead of 7 °C. In autumn the change comes about 5 days earlier, in spring about 5 days later. Less practice on slippery roads means a larger safety margin.
  • Experienced: the standard 7 °C rule and standard dates.
  • Confident: the same dates as experienced. Never later than the standard rule, because safety comes first.
